Campaigning works!
With our supporters around the world, we:
- persuaded the United Nations Security Council to discuss Burma for the first time and to demand the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. The Security Council continues to be engaged on Burma.
- persuaded the British government to double aid to Burma, which will save hundreds of thousands of lives.
- exposed human rights abuses that the dictatorship tries to keep secret.
- generated thousands of media stories about Burma.
In the past year, there are reports that the Burmese Army has stepped up its use of rape, gang-rape and sexual violence against ethnic women.
There are hundreds of political prisoners in Burma. They have been imprisoned just for peacefully calling for democracy and freedom in Burma.
Burma’s military-backed government is still allowed to buy foreign weapons to commit horrific human rights abuses.
Refugees in camps on the Thailand Burma border, and those hiding in the jungle from the Burmese Army are facing cuts in rations and shelter.
Companies investing in Burma risk funding a military-backed government responsible for human rights abuses and environmental destruction.
Systematic attacks against the Rohingya ethnic minority in Burma have left possibly hundreds killed and more than 100,000 displaced.
